Firm History

Silver, Freedman, Taff & Tiernan LLP (“SFTT”) was formed in January 2014 through the combination of two firms – the Washington, DC-based Silver, Freedman & Taff, L.L.P. and Washington, DC-based Elias, Matz, Tiernan & Herrick L.L.P., creating a preeminent firm with a nationally recognized practice focusing on the representation of financial institutions and their officers, directors and employees.

Four Decades of Practice Experience

SFTT incorporates each firm’s four decades of practice experience, with our attorneys having acted as counsel to both issuers and underwriters in over 1,000 securities offerings raising more than $40 billion, and as counsel for both buyers and sellers in over 800 merger and acquisition transactions totaling in excess of $50 billion in deal value. Historically, the firms were recognized in the national press as industry lenders in the areas of mutual to stock conversions and mergers and acquisitions.

The establishment of SFTT brings together attorneys with substantial expertise in regulatory, corporate and securities matters, capital raises, mergers and acquisitions and employee benefit and compensation matters. Our attorneys specialize in structuring transactions with start-up and private equity firms, assisting management in the establishment of employee benefit and compensation programs, developing and implementing corporate defense planning and tactics, and providing real estate, litigation support and tax planning advisory services.

The attorneys of SFTT assist numerous community banks with corporate, securities and regulatory matters. In addition to our large number of financial institution clients, our attorneys represent manufacturers, retailers, distributors, medical practitioners, technology firms and restaurant chains.
